Lakai was founded by professional skateboarders and Girl Skateboards co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard in 1999, after both riders left DC Shoes. The brand was built around one simple goal: to make shoes that actually perform. Lakai achieved this by focusing their shoes around how they feel on a skateboard, trying to make the best skate shoe. They added reinforced ollie areas and considered flex points in order to make a shoe that can perform. The 2007 skate video "Fully Flared" is one of the most well-known skate videos, made by Lakai.
